Elephants of London

August 2, 2010

Between the 3rd of May and the 29th of June 2010, London was invaded by Elephants. 258 plastic elephants the size of genuine adolescents were given to different artists, who decorated them as they saw fit. The elephants were then placed around London as a public art exhibition to raise awareness of the plight of elephants throughout the world.

Image-heavy post after the jump.

Wandering London during the exhibition weeks was near-guaranteed to bring you across at least one elephant, no matter how odd the location. They were in public parks, tourist areas, and on random streets. After the end of the exhibition they were taken to Sotheby’s for a charity auction which raised over four million pounds, 70% of which has gone directly to the Elephant Parade to help conserve elephants in the wild.

I didn’t trawl the streets for every last elephant, but I did get a few for you.

Kawaii!! I have seen cow version of something like this in Czech several years ago when I travelled there. Is the plastic animal parade like this popular in Europe?

It’s not common, but we do certainly like to have statues of animals around the place :)

How fabulous! We had cows like that in Monaco for a while, but they weren’t half as well done. Did you have a particular favourite?
